Famed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, along with billionaire entrepreneur Yuri Milner, will be announcing a mysterious new space exploration initiative, called Starshoot, today (April 12) at 12 pm EDT (4 pm GMT). The announcement will be occurring during an event at One World Discovery in New York City.

The details of the project have been kept extremely quiet so that is all we know about it — the project’s name and the involvement of Hawking and Milner.

Are you intrigued yet?

Yuri Milner is also funding two other projects called Breakthrough Message and Breakthrough Listen. Breakthrough Message awards prizes to people who help craft the best messages humanity could send to alien civilizations, while Breakthrough Listen is a 10-year, $100-million search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) initiative. Hawking was among the group of researchers who helped unveil Breakthrough Listen last July.

April 12 is also the 55th anniversary of the first-ever human spaceflight, which was made by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (who Yuri Milner was named after) on April 12, 1961, as well as the 35th anniversary of the first orbital mission of NASA’s space shuttle program.

Coincidence?

We will just have to wait and see what this secretive project is all about. However, you can CLICK HERE to watch the live announcement.
