Merry Christmas!

Most people choose to send Christmas cards to wish people a happy holiday season, but Ascending Technologies, a German tech manufacturer, chose to take things one step further.

Using their own drones, color-changing LED lights, and a camera on a long exposure setting, they made Christmas pictures come to life. The drones were programmed to follow a particular and precise flight path in order to trace out the desired shapes and as many as 400 predetermined points were used in each trajectory. Seen in real time, it just looks like drones flying around, but by setting a camera’s exposure to last up to 10 minutes, the photographers were able to capture the full images.

Seven different images were traced out: a present with a bow, a Christmas tree, Santa with his reindeer, a snowflake and three sets of text — “merry christmas,” “and a happy new year” and “From the AscTec Team.”

The Happy New Year text and the reindeer picture took the longest to draw — 10 minutes each — and the fastest was the present — taking only 7 minutes. The drones flew at a speed of 2 meters per second and the only picture that took two drones at the same time was the Christmas tree. All of the other color changes were pre-programmed.

Since a long exposure was used for each of the pictures, you can also see the stars moving across the sky in the background. This technique can be used to create beautiful pictures on a regular starry night.
