Most of us are familiar with rats, but here are 5 facts you most likely did not know about our rodent friends!

1. New Rat City

New York City is teeming with rats. It may have the biggest rat infestation in world!

2. The Toilet Rat

Rats can swim under water, and on rare occasions, crawl up the toilet pipes into people’s bathrooms.

3. Rat Island

There is an island called Rat Island off the coast of Alaska, and it used to be full of rats. After eradicating the Rats from the Island, the Island was since renamed and is now known as the Hawadax Island.

4. Rat Teeth

The front teeth of a rat can grow up to 5 inches per year. The teeth can grow faster or slower depending on the rodent’s diet.  This is one of the reasons why rats will gnaw on just about anything; it is to prevent their teeth from growing too long.

5. Rat Brains

Scientists say that Rats can laugh and dream.
