This Artist Manipulates Gravity to Balance Seemingly Impossible Objects

November 19, 2015 | Kelly Tatera

Can any of you balance the corner of a washing machine on a little rock?

Meet Nam Seok "Rocky" Byun, a South Korean artist with a particular unusually skill — he can balance any object. We’re not talking card towers, although those can be wildly impressive. Byun balances entire motorcycles on rocks, laptops and washing machines on just their corners, even people sitting in a chair balanced on one leg.

How does he do it? Watching his performances makes it seem like some kind of magic trick, or like he hypnotizes these objects to obey him instead of the laws of gravity. But in fact, he uses the laws of physics in his favor.

His secret is finding the perfect center of gravity for each object. According to Steve Spangler Science, “The center of gravity of any object is the point about which you can balance the object as if all the masses were concentrated or gathered at this point.” So basically, it’s the exact point at which the object balances from left to right and top to bottom.

With time, practice, and an understanding of the concepts of center of gravity and stability, these seemingly impossible balancing acts can be done by virtually anyone. But it’s no piece of cake — Byun has been practicing for nearly ten years now.
Go on, watch this video of his live performance and prepare to be stunned.
